George R.R. Martin Had A Hand In Westworld Season 3 Game of Thrones Cameo

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for Westworld Season 3!

Westworld Season 3 on HBO has been quite the entertaining ride so far. We’ve seen how it incorporated elements of Singapore in it, as well as performances of the affable Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad as Caleb Nichols.

However, many will also revel at the fact that the new season is chock full of cameos. The most notable of which is by that of another popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. We already know that the show’s creators were already going to be part of the episode. But what many, including us, didn’t know was that the episode also featured another big player in the series.

The image below (view at your own risk!!!!!) reveals it all:

Yup, that’s none other than Drogon, the eldest of Daenerys Targaryen’s beloved dragon children, featuring alongside GoT‘s creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, who played as a pair of technicians planning to kidnap the dragon from Medieval World and run off with it to Costa Rica.

Westworld showrunners Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan revealed that the GoT Easter egg was not just from a longstanding friendship with Weiss and Benioff, but also with the franchise’s original creator and writer, George R. R. Martin.

“We’re also friendly with George R.R. Martin, and George had consistently since the first season said, “We’ve got to do a tie-in with ‘Game of Thrones.’”, explained Nolan in a recent interview with Variety. “People forget that George was originally a TV writer and he came up in the TV world in which you’d occasionally have these crossover shows, which the fans would f—ing freak out over. So George had always been pitching the crossover show.”

Of course, while Martin is still working on the sixth book of A Song of Ice and Fire, The Winds of Winter, he is also currently working on the upcoming GoT prequel TV series on HBO, House of the Dragon, which is set to premiere sometime in 2022.

Quite an unexpected but refreshing cameo for the show, which no doubt left many fans reeling, despite Game of Thrones’ troubled final season. We’re now left wondering just how many more Easter eggs of such caliber could appear in the remaining six episodes of Westworld Season 3.

New episodes of Westworld Season 3 will air on Mondays at 9am SGT / Sundays at 10pm PST on HBO and HBO GO.
