Geek Review: Belkin Soundform Mini Wireless On-Ear Headphones For Kids

Here’s the one thing about kids – they want what adults have, even when it’s not the best option for them.

And when it comes to headphones, it’s more than just them not listening (in more ways than one), as the audio cans that adults use tend to be larger and heavier, making them more cumbersome around the heads of children.

Belkin’s new Soundform Mini Wireless On-Ear Headphones are the youthful solution, offering the little ones quality audio in a smaller size, that easily fits a six-year-old, nine-year-old and 11-year-old during our tests. These plastic cans have soft cushion cups, and come in pink and blue, giving the kids a brighter option than plain white or black ones, though both these options are also available.

As they are meant for kids, these headphones are significantly smaller, like the ones you get on airplanes, but sturdier, with a thick headband that extends the cans, for when your child wears a cap, or ties their hair with a bun on the top.

Still, the smaller curve of the headphones means there is greater resistance, so your child will feel some discomfort when they have these on for extended periods. Ironically, this is a good thing because it prevents your child from wearing it for long periods.

And that’s exactly what the kids were doing once they got hold of these headphones. They were happy to stream Spotify and watch YouTube from their iPads, and move all over the home. It’s one thing to have them listen to music, and carry their phone everywhere, but now, they have learned the freedom of being wireless connected, so they can move to the kitchen for drink, and leave their phone on the sofa.

What the Soundform Mini offers is also Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, which offers a range of up to five to seven metres, depending on the thickness of your walls, and enough to move around the house without a break in connectivity. If you’re worried about battery life, these hold about 20 hours on one charge, and offer easy pairing, for the kids to pair with their iPhones or Android devices.

And if these do run out of juice, it also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 1.2 metre audio cable, for a wired connection instead. And though the boys might not appreciate it, each headphone also comes with a sticker sheet, allowing each child to customize their unit as they see fit, though if they are anything like the little girls we know, they will just paste every sticker anywhere they can find a spot.
