Channing Tatum has made a triumphant debut as the card-flinging superhero Gambit in the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, thanks to a viral moment shared by Ryan Reynolds on Instagram. This cameo has reignited excitement among fans of the X-Men character, who has seen varying levels of screen time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a post on 27 August, Reynolds offered fans a clearer view of a scene featuring Gambit, portrayed by Tatum, where he is seen surviving a major battle in the Void. The scene zooms in on Gambit’s eyes, reflecting what Deadpool humorously refers to as a “Marvel Sparkle Circle”, which is an inter-dimensional portal where characters are able to hop through the multiverse. This has sparked widespread fan speculation about Gambit’s fate and possible roles in upcoming Marvel projects.
Reynolds also revealed that this particular sequence is subtly included in Deadpool & Wolverine, visible on a monitor in the background within the TVA setting, though it was initially too small for audiences to notice.
Despite the excitement and speculation, Marvel Studios has not confirmed any plans for a standalone Gambit movie or TV series. However, Tatum’s enthusiasm for the role and the character’s newfound visibility have fueled hopes among fans and the actor himself for more substantial screen time in the future.
Tatum has been vocal about his desire to explore Gambit further, telling Variety, “I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God,” when asked about the possibility of a standalone film. “From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, my friend. Please.” His passion for the role dates back to 2006 when he was first considered for Gambit in X-Men: The Last Stand, a role ultimately cut from the film and later filled by Taylor Kitsch in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The actor’s journey with Gambit has been fraught with challenges, including a previously planned spin-off that was cancelled following Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Tatum shared his frustrations and gratitude in an emotional Instagram post, thanking Reynolds for the opportunity to bring Gambit to life in Deadpool & Wolverine. The film itself has made a significant impact at the box office, boasting the largest R-rated global opening ever.
