First Looks: Dwayne Johnson & Auli’i Cravalho Return For Disney’s ‘Moana 2’

Disney’s beloved princess Moana is set to embark on a new adventure in Moana 2, with the studio recently sharing an intriguing image from the upcoming sequel. Following the massive success of the first film in 2016, the announcement of a sequel in February 2024 took fans by surprise, especially since a TV series was initially in the works before the studio decided to proceed with the sequel.

The recently-released first look at Moana 2 reveals an older Moana, confidently steering her boat with a resolute look and holding an oar adorned with Maui’s fish hook and a heart symbol. An intriguing aspect is the island in the background, which might be a colossal monster or shell creature, hinting at the dangers and mysteries Moana will encounter as she embarks on an expansive journey to search for people beyond Motunui.

Although specifics of the plot remain under wraps, the image underscores the continued significance of ocean exploration in the sequel. Disney’s announcement also confirmed the return of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho, reprising their roles as Maui and Moana, respectively. Johnson is also set to play Maui in a live-action adaptation of Moana helmed by Thomas Kail of Hamilton fame, indicating a dual representation of the character across animated and live-action formats.

Announced with a teaser in February, fans eagerly await Moana 2, which promises to combine Disney’s storytelling magic with rich musical heritage and thrilling sea expeditions.

Moana 2 sets sail in theatres on 27 November.
