‘Dead Rising’ Gets Surprise Second “Deluxe” Remaster For 2024

In a world overstuffed with zombie survival action, it’s always refreshing when a game introduces a new spin on the genre. Dead Rising has built a reputation for switching up the formula, adding a charming and offbeat photo-taking element to the weary thrill of mowing down undead hordes.

20 years after its debut, the beloved Capcom title is getting another new lease of life. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, technically a remaster of a remaster, will be available for “the newest generation of platforms” sometime in 2024, with the trailer showcasing upgraded visuals for the game’s opening scenes.

There’s a catch, though — it seems voice actor T.J. Rotolo won’t be reprising his role as protagonist Frank West. The freelance photojournalist also looks to be completely remodelled in the teaser, which includes dialogue snippets re-recorded from Rotolo.

Other details about Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster remain scant, but the description of “an updated release with a brand new look” suggests some potential gameplay polishes and additions. A launch window and platforms have yet to be announced.

Released in 2006 as an Xbox 360 exclusive, the original Dead Rising follows Frank West as he heads to a small zombie-infested Colorado town, and spends three in-game days to get the big scoop on the outbreak’s cause. In the process of investigation and snapping photos, he crosses paths with other survivors, helping them to fend off the undead and evil humans known as psychopaths.

It would later spawn three mainline sequels, a host of DLC expansions, and a handful of live-action movies. An HD re-release followed in 2016, bringing the action to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.

More details about the upcoming entry will be unveiled at the Capcom Next showcase on 2 July, 6am SGT (GMT+8) / 1 July, 11pm PST. The presentation is expected to run for about 25 minutes, and includes news on Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, as well as an extended look at Resident Evil 7 for iOS devices.
