DC Studios’ Green Lantern Series Adds ‘Ozark’ And ‘Watchmen’ Showrunners As Writers

DC superhero Green Lantern hasn’t had the best run on the live-action front. The 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds was ill-received, while Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League had to rework scenes where he was scheduled to appear. Now that DC’s upcoming Green Lantern series is moving forward, perhaps third time’s the charm.

Green Lantern Series Ozark Watchmen

In an Instagram post, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy will serve as writers on the project titled Lanterns. “Yes, it’s true,” he wrote. “The Lanterns DCU is series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof.”

Both scribes have notable credits under the belt — Lindelof is the co-creator and showrunner of Lost and HBO limited series Watchmen, while Mundy was showrunner on Netflix’s Ozark and executive produced Criminal Minds, Cold Case, Bloodline, and True Detective Season 4.

First announced as one of the first 10 projects under the rebooted DC Universe banner, Lanterns follows Hal Jordan (played by Reynolds in the Green Lantern movie) and former Black marine John Stewart. Story details remain under wraps, but fellow co-head Peter Safran revealed it will involve investigating a mystery that “plays a really big role leading us into the main story that we’re telling across our film and television.”

The show is listed with a 2024 to 2025 release window, so it’s possible that more writers will join the team. Currently, this is the only live-action Green Lantern project in development — a separate series for Max, which would have starred Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Scott as Guy Gardner and Alan Scott respectively, has been canned.
