DC Studios has dropped its final trailer for the upcoming horror adventure, Clayface, which offers a glimpse of Matt Hagen’s grotesque ultimate form ahead of the film’s launch on 23 October 2026.
While the final trailer features most of the same scenes shown in previous clips, such as the unsettling moment where Tom Rhys Harries’ titular character tries to prevent his eyes from fusing together using a pair of scissors while in the middle of a flight (during heavy turbulence, no less!), the clip ends with a shot of the character fully mutated into his final form, and while this consists of just his silhouette and the briefest glimpse of his back, it gives fans a better understanding of the scale and powers of the iconic DC villain, with similar powers to that of his appearance in the comics, such as the ability to morph his arm into a giant mace.
Clayface will tell the grotesque origin story of Hagen and the events that led him to become the shapeshifting DC villain. In the film, Hagen, a rising movie star, is left with career-ending injuries after being disfigured by the mob, which prompts him to seek out an experimental drug courtesy of scientist Dr Caitlin Corr (Naomi Ackie). While the drug initially completely fixes his face, it’s not long before devastating side effects emerge, which see Hagen’s face slowly start to melt off.
Directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil), the R-rated origin tale will be co-produced by DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran, alongside The Batman’s Matt Reeves and Se7en’s Lynn Harris. The film will also be written by horror legend Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep), which makes it a promising horror take on the character’s first live-action appearance.
Clayface will launch in theatres on 23 October 2026, with its official logline reading: “Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’ actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self … but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
