Megalodons are among the largest fish to ever exist. And giant shark movie The Meg is getting a bigger sequel in the form of Meg 2: The Trench.
The film’s trailer shows off all sorts of outrageous action — with the eponymous megalodon threatening beach-goers and even chomping at its prehistoric rival, the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Jason Statham returns as Jonas Taylor, a professional rescue diver, to make the most out of his shark-stabbing expertise. However, things might prove to be more challenging than his last outing. This time, as Jonas notes in the trailer, “They’re hunting in packs.”
Statham is joined by Chinese action star Wu Jing (Ride On, Wolf Warrior), who appears to be playing a cheerful brother-in-arms aiding Jonas in a deep sea investigation, before taking on a trio of sharks at a populated beach spot.
Cliff Curtis, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy will also be returning from the first movie. In addition to Wu Jing, they will be joined by Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil), Skyler Samuels (The Gifted), and Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Rambo: Last Blood).
Ben Wheatley (Kill List, A Field in England), best known for smaller scale thriller and horror films, will be directing Meg 2: The Trench. Wheatley takes over from Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), who directed the first film.
Meg 2: The Trench will be making a splash in theaters on 4 August 2023.
