Beat Duolingo’s High Valyrian Challenge To Win ‘Game of Thrones’ Life-size Steel Sword

It’s the crossover we never saw coming, but language learning platform Duolingo has joined forces with HBO Max to present a challenge for Game of Thrones fans. The reward that will be up for grabs? A real-life Valyrian steel sword, reserved only for the most worthy of them all.

Designed by the Duolingo team, the weapon, dubbed the Streak Keeper, sports a signature pommel with the head of Duo the owl, a handcrafted hilt with feather texture detailing, and a secret High Valyrian phrase on its rare, stainless steel blade. To have a shot at winning this collectible, enthusiasts have to learn the language of the dragon, and emerge top of the leaderboard with the most XP.

It’s a fun way to celebrate the premiere of the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, which is coming to the small screen on 21 August 2022. The event kicks off on the same day at 12am PT and will end on 23 October, 11.59pm PT, but comes with some conditions in tow: participants have to be above 18 years of age, live in the U.S., and complete the High Valyrian course.

Those who wish to take up the gauntlet can head over to Duolingo’s website and register their interest. Who knows, they might even become proficient enough to understand the dragons without having to look at the subtitles, though the majestic flying creatures aren’t the only things to look forward to. Novelist George R.R. Martin has praised the show for its deeply complex characterisations, stunning visuals, and excellent acting, even if actor Matt Smith thinks there are too many sex scenes in it.

All the best to all participants, and may the best (language) warrior win!
