Apple Acquires ‘Severance’ For US$70M, Brings It In-House & Eyes Spin-Offs

Apple TV has gained prominence for its sci-fi expertise, and that’s in no small part due to Severance. The Emmy-winning series surpassed Ted Lasso to become the streamer’s most viewed title, so it comes as no surprise that a third season is in the works (especially after the cliffhanger ending).

According to Deadline, there are plans for a fourth season, which hasn’t been officially greenlit, with Apple reportedly acquiring the show for US$70 million. The pact puts it under the umbrella of the in-house Apple Studios, and original production house, the indie Fifth Season, will remain as an executive producer. Additionally, filming for Season 3 is expected to kick off this summer, with Kogonada stepping into the director role after a producing stint on Pachinko.

The report also writes that creator Dan Erickson and executive producer/director Ben Stiller are “open to the idea of doing more with the Severance universe; possibilities include a prequel, spinoffs, and foreign versions.” There’s no word on a potential fifth season, which would be up to the pair and doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

Stiller has since addressed the information on X/Twitter (although which exact part remains unclear), advising fans against trusting it completely.

“Hey – talking to you because you’re a dedicated fan. Do not believe everything you read. Please. That article is all hearsay and no sources attributed,” reads the post. “All we want to do is make the show as good as possible and maintain it, and it’s always been and always will be our (and my) priority. Promise.”

Led by Adam Scott as Mark Scout, Severance follows employees at Lumon Industries, who undergo a surgical procedure that splits their consciousness into two: one for work, and one for their personal life. Other notable stars include Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, John Turturro, Patricia Arquette, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, Christopher Walken, and more.

No release date has been attached to Season 3.
