Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie, which has been in development since 2020, has now been put on hold for the foreseeable future, with the filmmaker admitting that the film has been put “on ice” to focus on other upcoming projects.

Speaking during an interview with Inverse, Waititi was asked about the state of the upcoming movie, to which he bluntly replied that it won’t be happening soon. “I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice, and we’re working on a different thing together,” he explained. “It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do.”
Announced in May 2020, the film has long been in gestation, with early reports stating that the film would release by late 2023, only for plans to fall through. While not many new details have emerged from the project in the years that followed, screenwriter Tony McNamara (Cruella) would eventually be attached as writer, with Waititi previously explaining that he wanted his film to “capture that joy and entertainment of those early ones like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.”

For now, it seems that fans are in for a long wait before Waititi’s Star Wars vision comes to light. Granted, the filmmaker is rather busy at the moment, with four other upcoming projects, including a leading voice role in the upcoming Netflix animated movie Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory, a sequel to the 2014 mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, a new Judge Dredd movie, and an adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel James.
Even though his Star Wars film is now on ice, Waititi isn’t ruling out a return to the sci-fi universe completely, adding that “ice ages do come to an end… Who knows?”
