Ahead of its release on 19 November 2026, Rockstar Games has dropped some new details about Grand Theft Auto VI, outlining the title’s massive open world and things players will be able to see and do as they play through its campaign.

Unveiled via Game Informer’s Grand Theft Auto VI cover story, the studio released more details on the scope of the game’s open world of Leonida, specifically regarding the side activities players will encounter, alongside its dynamic world systems such as weather and natural wildlife.
With the report centred on the scale of the game’s world, it’s no surprise that its map will be Rockstar’s biggest and most dense to date. As stated by Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut, Grand Theft Auto VI will feature a map that’s twice as large as the one seen in its predecessor, with environmental density at an all-time high too, teasing that the game will feature many more interior locations to explore.
Leonida is set to be not just the studio’s biggest city, but also its most dynamic, with Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, Owen Shepherd, explaining that the weather system for the game has been re-engineered to up its fidelity for a more dynamic experience, meaning that different parts of the map can feature different weather conditions at any point, and that weather effects will now react with the world more naturally, such as rain leaving puddles or leaves and debris being blown by the wind.

In addition, the game will also feature more severe weather conditions such as hurricanes. While Rockstar didn’t confirm how often they will occur or whether they will play a part in the game’s story, they did tease that fans can expect there to be instances of extremely heavy rain and strong winds.
Leonida will also be made up of six unique regions – Vice City, Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Grassrivers, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park – with its main campaign designed to take players across the map to showcase each region’s unique environment and potentially different enemy factions to deal with, such as a biker gang that rules over Ambrosia. To get around quicker, players will once again be able to “fast travel” by hopping in a taxi, but this time, Grand Theft Auto VI will feature a ride-sharing system which allows players to get in a vehicle with NPCs for unique optional conversations.
As for the things to do within Leonida, Rockstar laid out some of the side activities players will be able to engage in, with the list including base jumping, jet skiing, kayaking, scuba diving, racing, and hitting the gym – things already teased in its gameplay reveal trailer – alongside newly revealed ones like mini golf, billiards, air boating, or even visiting the zoo.

With every game in the franchise, a major part of the game will be the variety of outfits and vehicles players can purchase and discover, and the studio has teased that Grand Theft Auto VI will feature the largest collection of clothing and accessories to date, so players can live their shopaholic dreams in-game. As for vehicles, players will be able to carjack in new ways, as an NPC’s vehicle can now be equipped with high-end security systems like trackers or electronic locks. Once stolen, players will also be able to use an app called WAiNK to determine its resale value or the cost to make it their own personal vehicle, helping them decide whether to sell it for a quick buck or add it to their collection.
Finally, the game will also feature a massive variety of animals roaming the wild, with over 170 species spanning land mammals, birds, and a variety of aquatic species like sharks, jellyfish, and whales to discover while underwater. Players will also potentially be able to hunt and track animals, like the system in Red Dead Redemption 2, with Rockstar teasing that there will be rare animal types to encounter.
With so many new details outlined, Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be as big a game as fans expected, and players will no doubt be able to sink countless hours in its dynamic open world when the game finally launches on 19 November 2026 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
