Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor has expressed his desire to keep reprising his role as the iconic Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, should there ever be an opportunity.
Speaking to E! News while promoting his upcoming film, The End of Oak Street, McGregor was asked about his previous comments stating that there was a decade of stories left to tell of Obi-Wan, to which he reaffirmed that he is ready to step back into the role, even if Disney isn’t.
“I’m ready whenever they are. They just seem to not be ready, I don’t know why, but I’m up for it,” he explained. “At the end of the Obi-Wan series, I’m walking off into the desert; I’ve decided to leave. I’ve realised I can’t keep the pressure on Luke. I realised he has to have his own childhood, so I leave him with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. And we go off… but where are we going? And then the next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness in the cave up in the mountains.”
“What happens between those two moments is what I want to do and spend the rest of my career doing these stories,” he added. “Stories, series or movies. We’ve got plenty of time; I’ve got 10 years before I am Alec Guinesses’ age. So come on, Disney!”
McGregor’s comments follow his appearance in the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was set 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), and saw the Jedi Master emerging from hiding after the Jedi Order was purged to rescue the kidnapped Princess Leia from the Galactic Empire’s Inquisitors. The series also saw Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader, and Vivien Lyra Blair as a young Leia Organa.
The ending of Obi-Wan Kenobi does open the door for more adventures surrounding the Jedi Master, as McGregor described, with room for many stories to tell in the period of the character’s absence between then and the start of 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, which occurs much later in the Star Wars timeline.
McGregor is clearly eager to step into the shoes of Obi-Wan once more, but considering a second season of the series seems unlikely, and the recent underperformance of The Mandalorian and Grogu, it’s unclear if that opportunity would ever arise.
