James Gunn’s upcoming Man of Tomorrow sequel is set to give David Corenswet’s Superman some backup for his fight against Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, as the film will see Xolo Maridueña reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, aka the Blue Beetle.

As reported by Deadline, sources close to production confirmed that Maridueña will be suiting up once more following his debut as the hero in Ángel Manuel Soto’s 2023 film, Blue Beetle. While it’s currently unclear how big a role he will play, Maridueña joins Man of Tomorrow’s previously announced cast, which includes Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Adria Arjona as Maxima.
2023’s Blue Beetle saw Maridueña as Reyes, a college graduate who comes into possession of an alien scarab, which subsequently latches onto him and transforms him into the Blue Beetle. Armed with a high-tech exoskeleton capable of flight, super strength, and the ability to materialise any weapon he desires, Reyes uses his newfound powers to take on the evil Kord Industries and disrupt their plans for world dominance.
The 2023 film saw a supporting cast of Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, George Lopez, and Belissa Escobedo as Jaime’s grandmother, mother, uncle and younger sister, respectively, alongside Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, Jaime’s love interest and new CEO of Kord Industries, so it remains to be seen if any of these characters will return alongside Maridueña’s Blue Beetle in Man of Tomorrow.

With the appearance of Blue Beetle, Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be an ensemble of heroes from James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, as the film is also set to feature Milly Alcock’s Supergirl following her eponymous 2026 movie and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, aka Green Lantern, who will be making his big-screen debut following his upcoming Lanterns HBO series in August. It seems the threat of Brainiac is one that calls for an epic superhero team-up, so it will be interesting to see if the sequel will also introduce any other iconic heroes across the DC universe.
Man of Tomorrow will launch in theatres on 9 July 2027.
