German director Uwe Boll is rebooting perhaps one of the most disastrous video game film adaptations ever made, with a new Alone in the Dark movie in the works.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Boll’s production company Event Films has acquired the rights to adapt the survival horror video game series from publisher THQ Nordic. Of course, this isn’t the first time Boll has done an Alone in the Dark film, previously helming a 2005 movie of the same name that loosely adapted the game’s plot, andwas widely panned by critics and audiences alike.
This time around, Boll is planning to stay closer to the source material and will adapt the storyline of the game franchise’s latest release, 2024’s Alone in the Dark remake. “We will capture the spirit and the era of the original games and follow the story of the new game,” Boll said in a statement, “we can’t wait to reboot the franchise and cast our new Edward Carnby.”

Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, the original Alone in the Dark game debuted in 1992 and followed two protagonists, Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood, as they investigated the mysterious death of the latter’s uncle, Jeremy. The game largely takes place within Derceto, a mansion in Louisiana infamous for being haunted by an evil presence, with both characters encountering supernatural beings and dangers as they venture within. The 2024 remake expanded upon the initial plot, providing not only additional story elements that built upon each character’s backstories but also multiple endings depending on the choices a player makes during their playthrough.
In terms of video game film adaptations, no name is more infamous than that of Boll, as he is responsible for a slew of movies in the early 2000s, which often took extreme liberties with their respective source material. Some examples include 2003’s House of the Dead, 2005’s Bloodrayne and 2008’s Far Cry, which all flopped both at the box office and among audiences, so let’s see if this new reboot will be second time’s the charm, or if this will be another horrible gaming adaptation to add to his belt.
