Toho’s Upcoming Godzilla Anime Series Stars Protagonist With The King Of Monster’s Powers

With a storied legacy spanning 70 years, Godzilla is no stranger to different lore and form depictions across various media. In a new upcoming anime series for the franchise, the King of Monsters will undergo another fresh transformation – this time, led by a protagonist who possesses his powers.

The untitled instalment was announced at Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2025, with the official account teasing, “Is that boy human, or Godzilla?” No other details, including a release window, staff members, or voice cast, were shared, but Orange, the studio behind Godzilla Singular Point, and Thai outfit Igloo Studio (My Daemon) will co-produce.

“This work is a first for the franchise, featuring a boy who possesses the power of Godzilla, and we believe it will be able to more deeply portray both the fear and hope of the modern era,” said Keiji Ota, Chief Godzilla Officer at Toho (via Crunchyroll).

The iconic kaiju can be seen in the backdrop of the accompanying concept art, where the main character launches a beam out of a scaly, hardy arm, reminding fans of the monster’s signature breath attack. Intentional or not, the premise is heavily reminiscent of Kaiju No. 8, Naoya Matsumoto’s science fantasy manga about a teenager with the ability to transform into a kaiju after ingesting a parasitic creature.

The upcoming anime series is but one of the Godzilla projects in the pipeline. In addition to the 2026 sequel to Godzilla Minus Zero and Godzilla X Kong: Supernova for the big screen, the story of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will also continue on Apple TV when Season 2 roars to life next February. More recently, the King of Monsters invaded Tokyo’s Haneda Airport as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, greeting visitors in all of its 40-metre glory.
