‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ 2026 Sequel Marks Next Chapter In Toho’s Monster Franchise

Toho has officially unveiled the title of the next chapter of its monster saga, Godzilla Minus Zero (stylised as Godzilla -0.0), alongside the upcoming film’s official logo and expected release window of late 2026.

This announcement was made during the annual Godzilla Fest in Tokyo, and was further confirmed by Toho’s official Twitter/X account, which states that the film will be written, directed and supervised for VFX by Yamazaki Takashi, who returns after helming 2023’s Godzilla Minus One alongside Shirogumi Inc., the studio in charge of the film’s visual effects.

Additionally, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Yamazaki and Toho are reportedly “locking in a late-2026 global release window, with production ramping up in New Zealand and Norway later this year.” The official logo for Godzilla Minus Zero was also revealed, leaning into the same minimalistic black-and-white brushstroke aesthetic from the previous film, although whether it’s “zero” naming implies a reset for the franchise still remains to be seen, as no further plot details were announced.

Expectations for the new film are high, especially considering the success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, which made history by not only becoming the highest-grossing  Japanese Godzilla film in both Japan and North America at JPY7.65 billion (US$50 million) and US$56 million grossed respectively, but it also became the first Godzilla film ever nominated for an Academy Award during the 96th Academy Awards, and also the first Japanese feature to win an Oscar for best visual effects.

It remains to be seen if Godzilla Minus Zero can live up to these lofty expectations when it releases sometime in late 2026, although the film is set to feature a much bigger budget compared to its predecessor, according to Variety’s previous interview with Yamazaki, so hopes are high that the upcoming movie will be an even more dangerous beast.
