‘American Psycho’ Remake Won’t Be Gender-Swapped Or Star Margot Robbie After All

The new American Psycho remake won’t gender-swap its leading protagonist or star Margot Robbie after all, contrary to recent reports.

Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)

Reports had initially emerged from sites like The Sun, stating that the leading role of the film, originally played by Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) in the 2000 movie, would be gender-swapped for the remake, with Robbie (Barbie) lined up to take on the role, leading to an expected discourse online.

It seems these reports were inaccurate, however, as Deadline’s sources claimed that the remake, helmed by Italian film director Luca Guadagnino, will stay true to the spirit of its source material and won’t be gender-swapped after all, stating that the claims were a “non-starter”.

With this latest development, the upcoming film is set to be a faithful adaptation of the original 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, which gained infamy at the time for its graphic violence and serial killer protagonist. The original 2000 American Psycho film, helmed by Mary Harron, starred Bale as investment banker turned serial killer Patrick Bateman, and garnered an instant following, often being considered one of Bale’s best films.

No official word has been announced yet on who will play Bateman in the new movie. The American Psycho remake is penned by Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum), with Frenesy Films producing under Lionsgate.
