“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations,” said Lord and Miller in a combined statement, “When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”

First appearing in 1941 in Pep Comics #22, Archie grew to become the most popular character in the comic, eventually given his own series which debuted a year later, spawning a massive comic book series with 713 issues to date. Even though the upcoming movie’s plot details have not been confirmed, the film looks to offer a more grounded Archie live-action adaptation compared to his previous screen incarnation in the 2017 CW drama Riverdale, which imbued its iconic characters with thriller and sometimes supernatural elements.

Apart from the Spider-Verse films, Lord and Miller are also known for 2014’s The Lego Movie and 2012’s 21 Jump Street, which the pair directed, and are currently working on Project Hail Mary, an upcoming sci-fi adventure film based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir. The upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which the pair are also producing and writing, is also in the works and is set for release in June 2027.
