Since its announcement trailer last September, fans have been clamouring for more information about Sucker Punch’s upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, Ghost of Yōtei. Now, via an update to the game’s store page, more details have finally been revealed regarding its setting, plot and release window.
Via its freshly updated PlayStation Store page, Ghost of Yōtei’s story description reads: “300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, a new warrior – Atsu – rises from the ashes of her homestead. Filled with fury and determination, Atsu will hunt down those responsible for the death of her family and exact her revenge. Every odd job and bounty will provide the coin she needs for her journey. But how she fights, survives, and evolves the legend of the Ghost, will be up to you.”

As a stark contrast to its predecessor’s tale, which saw protagonist Jin Sakai embark on a quest to liberate Tsushima from the Mongol invasion, Ghost of Yōtei’s story is set to be a lot more personal for its main hero, Atsu, revolving around a tale of revenge as she hunts down her family’s killers. She is also described as a “Lone Wolf”, so it will be interesting to see if and how companions come into play within the game, especially since most of Ghost of Tsushima’s plot involved building up a resistance to the Mongol threat.
Its brief story snippet also hints at some new gameplay features, with the line “every odd job and bounty” alluding to a bounty-hunting mechanic of some sort, to which players can earn “coin” upon completion, which also suggests an actual in-game economy this time around, unlike its predecessor’s material-based character progression system.

With the game now set in 1603, 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, that leaves room for some interesting gameplay features to suit the massive jump in the time period and hopefully showcase the technological advancements in terms of Atsu’s toolset. For now, the game’s description merely teases “new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and new weapons for Atsu to master”, including an ōdachi curved blade, a kusarigama chained weapon similar to that wielded by Naoe in the recently released Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and dual katanas. With this reveal, close-combat gameplay is already shaping up to be more varied than its predecessor’s sole katana option.
The most surprising reveal from its description, however, was the fact that the game is still planned for release sometime in 2025, so fans can expect to hear more details soon and hopefully some actual gameplay footage to boot. Ghost of Yōtei will launch exclusively for the PS5, with “enhanced performance and visuals” on PS5 Pro.
