Sonic Faces Off Against The King Of Monsters In Godzilla Crossover Comic

Team Sonic is about to encounter their biggest adversary yet, literally, as the Blue Blur and his friends will face off against Godzilla in a new comic miniseries, which is set to unleash the giant kaiju on Green Hill Zone.

As reported by IGN, the Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla comic will be written by Nick Marino (Godzilla Rivals) and drawn by Jack Lawrence (Sonic the Hedgehog), with colours by Reggie Graham. Published by IDW, the comic will also mark the first crossover between two of the publisher’s biggest IPs, and was something the team had been wanting to achieve for quite some time.

“This crossover in particular is also one that fans have been asking us for loud and clear for years, so it’s been high up on the list to try to make happen,” said IDW’s Sonic Editorial in a statement to IGN, “this idea has actually been on the IDW team’s radar for a very long time, but it wasn’t until the last year or so that all the pieces fell into place and we could get to work on it!”

As explained by Marino, the Sonic and Godzilla crossover will also differ from the usual Godzilla comic affair in one major way: the lack of a human element, providing a unique challenge and writing experience.

Sonic X Godzilla is populated solely by talking animals, kaiju, and robots,” he explained, “My previous Godzilla work [was] all about how the kaiju disrupted human life in that very real city, and my own human experience informed the narrative. SxG takes the Toho monsters to Sonic’s world, a place where sassy technicolour animals move at blinding speeds. What does a pink hedgehog with a giant mallet think when she sees an enormous flying insectoid beast the size of a city block? That’s a totally different kind of writing challenge.”

The comic’s cover art also teases that Godzilla will be invading the familiar grounds of the Green Hill Zone, and according to Marino, fans can expect more references to both the Sonic and Godzilla universes.

Sonic Adventure (1998) became a huge inspiration [for] this project… when you’re dealing with giant monsters, you have to think on a bigger scale, and Station Square provided an incredible canvas for us to splatter with destruction and mayhem,” he teased, “[On] the Toho side of things, I sought inspiration from some of my fave flicks that feature rotating battles between multiple kaiju like Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla vs. Megalon.

“My goal has been to take the audience on an adventure across Sonic’s world, from corners we visit often to locales we haven’t seen before,” Marino added, “For example, Eggman needs a lab big enough for his kaiju-sized ambitions, right? Naturally, Knuckles will be joining in on the fight too, and I think you can guess what that means. And for the old school gamers out there, if you remember Amy’s first action stage from Sonic Adventure, then you know that you’re in for some incredibly amusing action in Sonic X Godzilla.”

Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla #1 will be released in Summer 2026.
