Skybound Kicks Off Crowdfunding Support For AAA ‘Invincible’ Video Game

Skybound Entertainment is taking its ambitions up a notch with the announcement of a crowdfunding campaign to develop a new game set in the Invincible universe. Unlike usual Kickstarter-style efforts, however, this is a direct investment into the company itself.

The funds will go towards developing a “highly produced, high-octane” triple-A title based on the comic book series created by Robert Kirkman. An internal 30-person studio is helming the project, comprising handpicked industry veterans with previous working experience at Activision Blizzard, EA, Epic Games, and more.

“Most crowdfunded videogames are centered around indie games and retail investors rarely have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of AAA game publishers,” reads the campaign’s description. “Skybound is developing a highly produced, high-octane blood bath that is anything but indie. Our bona fide global hit IP, Invincible, is at the center, and we’ve hand-picked our own team, consisting of more than 30 gaming industry veterans, to make it happen.

“We have successfully raised $18 million from everyday investors and fans via Republic/Seedrs, and we are inviting you to join us once again. What do you say? Guts, gore, and potential investor glory?”

Not much else is known about the new Invincible game, but that hasn’t stopped fans from cashing in. At the time of writing, the crowdfunding campaign has raised nearly US$450,000, surpassing its goal of US$50,000 with a little under two weeks left to invest. 30 April will be the last day to do so.

The news comes weeks after the season 2 finale for Amazon’s animated series aired on Prime Video. It marked the return of Invincible after a four-month break, and continues to delve into the complex world of superheroes and villains without D.A. Sinclair’s original voice actor, Ezra Miller, whom Eric Vauza (X-Men ’97Rick & Morty) replaces. A release window for Season 3 has yet to be set, but voice work is already completed.
