Household chores are named chores for a reason, but everyone’s got to do them, so why not make the process as seamless as possible? Fortunately, gone are the days when all we had were brooms and wired vacuums, as cordless vacuums are not just readily available, but constantly improving to make the cleaning process fast, effective, and most importantly, fuss-free.
While UK brand Dyson has largely dominated the modern vacuum space, there will always be new players itching to claim the throne, such as American player SharkNinja, who jump into the fray with not just competitive innovations, but prices too. To test out how the potential underdog stacks up to the king, we put two cordless vacuums to the ultimate stress test – the Shark PowerClean 360 and the Dyson V12 Detect Absolute Slim HEPA – to find out who will emerge victorious.
On paper, the Shark PowerClean 360 seems to bring a lot to the table, armed with intelligent cleaning technologies such as an IQ cleaning mode, which makes use of sensors spread around the unit in order to dynamically adjust suction speed depending on the surface of the floor being cleaned, as well as an edge sensor on its brush head that automatically increases suction power when cleaning corners. The vacuum also boasts a reverse suction design, meaning it can pick up dirt while moving both forwards and backwards, a feature not commonly seen on other vacuum cleaners.
Of course, actions speak louder than words, so we tested the validity of Shark’s claims by pitting it head-to-head with the Dyson across five different stress tests – reverse suction with heaps of flour, cleaning hard-to-reach areas, cleaning across different surfaces, edge cleaning, and a hair tangle test, the bane of all vacuums – to see how it measures up to the top dog.

The Shark PowerClean 360 retails for S$849 and includes the unit, its self-emptying charging dock, and an additional vacuum head accessory that functions as both a crevice and brush tool, while the Dyson V12 Detect Absolute Slim HEPA costs S$999 and comes with four additional brush head tools and a wall-mounted charging dock.
