The Jurassic World franchise is roaring back to life with Jurassic World Rebirth, the seventh film in the series, set to debut on 2 July 2025. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, The Creator), the film introduces a fresh chapter in the beloved dino-saga, five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion. This time, Scarlett Johansson takes center stage as Zora Bennett, a former military operative thrust into a high-stakes mission on a dinosaur-infested island.
Empire recently unveiled the first image of Johansson as Bennett in Jurassic World Rebirth, showing her wading through tall grass armed with a tranquilizer gun. The scene teases a tense moment where Bennett must navigate the dangers of an untamed wilderness, highlighting the franchise’s return to its roots of suspenseful, ground-level action.
Director Gareth Edwards shared his vision for Jurassic World Rebirth, explaining how it pays homage to the style of Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park. “It goes back to what I loved about the original,” Edwards said. “There’s an embarrassment of riches of different set-piece-type scenarios and tense, fun action moments. There were a lot of opportunities as a filmmaker to have a lot of fun and try and play games with the audience.” He promised a blend of nostalgic thrills and new narratives, describing the film as “a whole new chapter in the timeline of Jurassic.”
The story follows Bennett as she leads a team tasked with retrieving genetic material from three of the world’s largest dinosaurs. For Bennett, the mission is both a financial windfall and a chance to rediscover purpose after leaving the military. However, as the operation unfolds, she begins to grapple with the ethical dilemmas surrounding their actions. Edwards noted, “She starts questioning the ethical rights and wrongs of what they’re doing.” Bennett’s morally complex character recalls some of the franchise’s most memorable protagonists, like Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler, promising a mix of action and introspection.
Adding to the drama, the team’s mission is complicated by the presence of a shipwrecked civilian family on the island. Balancing their original objective with the responsibility of protecting the stranded family introduces high stakes and emotional depth to the narrative.
The cast of Jurassic World Rebirth also includes Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Luna Blaise (Manifest), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Ed Skrein (Rebel Moon). Their characters are expected to navigate an array of tense scenarios, with Edwards teasing thrilling encounters with iconic dinosaurs. “It’d be a crime against cinema not to feature certain dinosaurs,” he said, inviting speculation about which prehistoric giants will make their presence felt.
