The superheroes at Warner Bros. Games aren’t having a good time. Following a dismal year that saw several projects falling short of expectations, including Warner Bros. Montreal’s Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and party brawler MultiVersus, the future of Monolith’s Wonder Woman game is looking murky. The only silver lining (or not, depending on how you look at things) is a new Batman title reportedly in development at Rocksteady, though details remain sparse.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the studio behind the beloved Batman: Arkham Trilogy is seeking a “return to Batman for a single-player game”. Fans shouldn’t get their hopes too high, however, as it is “years away from landing”, according to “people familiar with the timeline.”
The report also details the struggles of other titles behind closed doors, starting with Monolith’s take on the Princess of Themyscira, which has reportedly “struggled to coalesce” since its announcement in 2021. It’s said to have cost Warner around US$100 million, having switched directors and rebooted in early 2024, with its fate described by Bloomberg’s sources to be “in question”.

It’s been a long rocky road for the project — initial plans involved a reimagining of the studio’s beloved Nemesis system from its Middle-earth entries and the heroine’s ability to befriend enemies, but were scrapped in favour of a more “traditional action-adventure” experience. In light of its troubled development, Warner Bros. Montreal was drafted to help Monolith after their hopes of a Constantine and Flash game were dashed. The team is now allegedly working on a pitch for a new Game of Thrones title.
Released in 2009, Batman: Arkham Asylum is the first instalment of the critically acclaimed series, comprising four mainline entries and a spin-off. It has collectively sold over 32 million copies worldwide, with Arkham Knight becoming the fast-selling game of 2015.
