Ana de Armas steps into the John Wick universe in her latest role in the upcoming spinoff From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. The first trailer for the film, where de Armas plays a vengeful assassin, stirred excitement among fans of the franchise.
Set during the timeline of 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, de Armas portrays Eve Macarro, who is training under the traditions of the Ruska Roma, one of the 12 powerful criminal organisations in the John Wick universe. The story introduces Macarro as she seeks vengeance in the assassin underworld for the wrongs done to her in her past, including her father’s murder.
Keanu Reeves makes a cameo in the trailer, linking directly to the events and characters of the 2019 film, where the Ruska Roma was introduced. Macarro is seen seeking advice from Reeves’ character, John Wick, to which he responds, affirming that she is already on the path of vengeance — much like his own.
Directed by Len Wiseman of Underworld fame, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is a narrative continuation of the John Wick series, weaving in new and familiar faces. Ian McShane reprises his role as Winston, the Continental Hotel owner who meets Macarro during her youth. Lance Reddick, who recently passed away, appears as Charon, welcoming Macarro to the Continental as an adult. Anjelica Huston returns as the Director of the Ruska Roma, who oversees Macarro’s transformation into a formidable assassin.
The trailer hints at Macarro’s intense training regime, from hand-to-hand combat to firearms, showcasing her development into a formidable fighter. It promises high-octane action and intricate fight choreography, hallmarks of the John Wick series. New characters like Norman Reedus’ mysterious Pine warn Macarro of the dangers she faces.
Originally slated for a 2024 release, the premiere was pushed back to June 2025, to allow for enhancements to the action scenes under the guidance of Chad Stahelski, director of the main John Wick films. Stahelski’s involvement aims to maintain the franchise’s high standards of cinematic action sequences.
Ana de Armas expressed excitement about the project, describing the film as “dangerous, sexy, and very John Wick.” She added in an interview with Collider, “I think people are going to be surprised. I’m biased. Of course, I like the movie, but I think it’s really cool. It’s going to be amazing.”
The anticipation for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina builds as it promises to expand the John Wick universe and explore new layers of its storytelling while continuing to deliver the exhilarating action that fans adore.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina pirouettes into cinemas on 6 June 2025.
