Amazon’s ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel Prepares For Ludicrous Speed With April 2027 Release

The Schwartz awakens once more, as Amazon’s upcoming sequel to the 1987 parody film Spaceballs is blasting off towards its release date on 23 April 2027.

As reported by Deadline, the sequel’s new release date also coincides with its 40th anniversary, giving more cause for celebration. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Strays) and written by Josh Gad (Central Park), Dan Hernandez (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem) and Benji Samit (Pokémon: Detective Pikachu). Additionally, Gad also uploaded a post on his Instagram page celebrating the announcement, writing, “May the April 23rd, 2027 be with you!!!”

As a direct follow-up to the 1987 Mel Brooks-directed film, which became a cult classic for poking fun at sci-fi staples like Star Wars, Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Spaceballs sequel will see the return of Brooks as Yogurt, a character parodying Star Wars’ Yoda, Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Rick Moranis as Darth Vader ripoff Dark Helmet, and Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa.

The sequel will also introduce new faces, including Bill Pullman’s son Lewis as Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Vespa, alongside Keke Palmer as Destiny and Gad in a yet to be specified role, with this trio serving as the sequel’s leading protagonists.

“While the title, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” said Amazon in a previous statement during the project’s initial announcement.

The Spaceballs sequel is set to spoof the world of sci-fi once more as it barrels towards its 23 April 2027 release, not just at Light Speed, but at Ludicrous Speed.
