Amazon Singapore Hikes Prime Membership, Adds Annual Plan To Keep Fees Low

Amazon Singapore has announced a price adjustment to its Prime membership, the first since its 2017 launch. The monthly fee will increase from S$2.99 to S$4.99 effective 28 August for new members and 28 September onwards for existing members, on the date of their next renewal. This change aligns with recent subscription increases across the digital content industry, including platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify within the last year.

Despite the hike, Amazon is introducing an annual subscription option priced at S$49.90, offering a significant 16% savings compared to the monthly rate. This new annual rate effectively grants members two months of service free each year, maintaining the value proposition of Prime membership amidst the price increase.

Prime membership offers a suite of benefits, including exclusive access to sales events like Prime Day and Black Friday, free international and one-day domestic delivery on select items, monthly free games, and streaming access to Amazon Prime Video. The platform features popular original series such as The Boys, The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Fallout, and Reacher.

Peter Li, Director for China and Singapore at Amazon, emphasised the comprehensive value of Prime membership: “Prime offers an incredible combination of shopping, savings, and entertainment in a single membership that we know our members love. To continue expanding Prime member benefits and growing our offerings, we will be changing the price of Prime from S$2.99 to S$4.99 per month. Additionally, we are introducing an annual plan for members to unlock even greater value. At S$49.90 per year, members who sign up for the annual plan will enjoy savings of over 16% compared to the monthly plan, equivalent to two months free per year.”

With this pricing strategy, Amazon aims to buffer the impact of the price increase while enhancing the appeal of its annual membership. The annual plan not only provides a cost-effective option for consumers but also reflects Amazon’s commitment to enriching the membership experience.

Despite its affordability, it’s important to note that Amazon Prime in Singapore does not include two significant features that are available in other regions: Amazon Music and Amazon Photos. This limitation positions the Singapore Amazon Prime offering as focusing mainly on video streaming and shopping perks without the full suite of services provided elsewhere.

However, Amazon insists that the adjusted price still ensures value, citing a broad selection of products, fast delivery options, and discounts up to 10% off for Prime members on over a million products. As Amazon Singapore navigates its first major pricing change, it continues to leverage its extensive range of services and discounts to provide value to its subscribers.
