Warner Bros. is building upon the success of A Minecraft Movie, with a sequel in the works and scheduled for release in 2027.
As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. has teased that details about the sequel will “remain deep in the mine for now”, although Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) will return to direct and co-write the follow-up alongside Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer).
A Minecraft Movie, which was released in April this year, centred around a group of misfits comprised of Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Garett Garrison (Jason Momoa) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) as they enter a portal to a cubic world known as the Overworld and meet an expert crafter named Steve (Jack Black), with the group working together to defeat the Piglins and return home.
Based on the 2009 sandbox video game by Mojang Studios, the movie would go on to become an instant theatrical hit, garnering a staggering US$301 million global debut following its opening weekend, setting a new record for video game film adaptations. The movie would go on to end its box office run with a US$957 million global haul, making it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film in 2025, following Lilo & Stitch.
While no details have been confirmed, Minecraft 2 (the sequel’s working title) will likely follow the events of A Minecraft Movie’s end-credits scene, which saw Black’s Steve returning to the real world to help Garrett with his new game, and upon returning to his old house, it’s revealed that the house’s new owner was none other than Alex, who was the game’s second playable character to be introduced after Steve.
Hess had also previously teased that the movie would focus on the relationship between the two video game characters via an interview with Deadline earlier this year, stating that these are the characters they would be “bringing to the table without a doubt”.
Minecraft 2 is set to launch in theatres on 23 July 2027.
