Nintendo has dropped a surprise trailer for its upcoming Star Fox remake via a shadow-dropped Nintendo Direct broadcast, revealing its familiar on-rails shooting action now with a shiny coat of paint. Best of all, fans don’t have to wait much longer to relive the nostalgia, as the game will launch on 25 June 2026 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2.
As a ground-up remake of the 1997 Nintendo 64 title Star Fox 64, the upcoming remake offers the same arcadey space shooter action of the original, now with overhauled visuals and redesigned visuals for its main group of anthropomorphic heroes. The new look of its iconic cast of Fox, Slippy, Falco, and Peppy has divided fans, however, with some praising their new realistic portrayals, while others state that they look too uncanny, even comparing them to taxidermied animals.
On the gameplay front, Star Fox looks to keep the original’s systems entirely intact, meaning players will still pilot their Arwings on on-rails missions, with some tasking them to drive across the land and seas in the Landmaster and the Blue-Marine instead. Players will engage in a story campaign featuring familiar locations like Corneria and Fichina, although new cutscenes have been added to expand upon the original game’s narrative.
Additionally, the remake will also add a new challenge mode, which allows players to replay completed missions with additional objectives that might present them with scenarios not seen in the campaign, such as the appearance of unique enemies to hunt down. The game’s online mode, Battle Mode, will now feature a playable Star Wolf, as players compete to complete objectives locally via Nintendo’s GameShare or online.
The Star Fox remake will also make use of the Nintendo Switch 2’s unique console features, such as mouse targeting for its Joy-Cons, and for those who own its camera peripheral, they can also apply AR filters while using GameChat and have the avatars of Fox and the gang mirror their expressions.
The Star Fox remake will take flight once more on the Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches on 25 June 2026.
