Geek Review: Holy Potatoes! We’re in Space?!

If you ever wanted to be Han Solo, this might be the closest thing to it. Except you don’t rescue a princess, you save a grandpa instead.

Holy Potatoes! We’re in Space?! is a turn-based, rogue-like space RPG that has you managing your own spaceship as you explore a spud-filled universe. You play as Cassie and Fay, two budding space adventurers (or pirates, depending on how you play the game) who have to save their beloved grandfather Jiji from the dark side AKA The Eclipse.

Visually, the game is just like its predecessor. It uses brightly-coloured, flat vector-style artwork and vegetable-inspired characters. Game play is simple and straightforward – just point and click for stuff to happen.

To search for Jiji, you have to warp to different galaxies, explore different planets and clear quest objectives. Each galaxy has its own unique cluster of planets that are of varying difficulty for you to clear. The planets are filled with enemy crafts, which you can battle for loot.

There are also the typical RPG situations, which can be as simple as deciding (or not) to help an old lady or open a random box you find. Depending on the option you choose, you could be rewarded with weapon construction materials, in-game money ($tarch) or be attacked by someone else. They could also involve you meeting a time-displaced spud with a sonic screwdriver.

The battle are turn-based, with each turn giving you more AP or “charge”. Each weapon equipped to your ship has different “charge” costs. At the start of the game your weapons barely use the entire charge bar per round, but as you start getting better weapons you will want to upgrade it. There’s more than one option for upgrades, so you get to modify your ship to your play style. A decent portion of the game will be spent farming materials and in-game money to be used for your upgrades.

When battling an enemy, you can opt to destroy all their weapons and be offered $tarch to let your enemy escape with his ship. Or you can blow the hull to smithereens and loot the ship.

There is some strategy involved in beating your opponent but it’s pretty easy to grasp. Your weapons can and will get damaged or destroyed during battle. As you only have one shield, you have to decide whether it’s more important to protect your weapons or hull as you assault the enemy. You can shift your shield around as you need, so it’s important to keep track of the damage you’re taking.

The mixture of battles and RPG situations help to keep the game from feeling like a typical farming game, offering brief and often funny interludes between battles. The animation is simple and clean which fits the style of the game the way gravy fits mashed potatoes.

Just like the previous Holy Potatoes! game, there are lots of cameos from famous historical characters and modern pop culture characters. Each character has different skills and attributes. Take note of the said attributes as it can (and will) affect how efficient your crew is and how powerful your spaceship will become.

The in-game dialogue is filled with punny moments with lots of references to classic lines or trending phrases. The conversations are fun to read as they’re witty and filled with personality.

Overall, Holy Potatoes! We’re in Space?! is a lighthearted game that’s best enjoyed by the casual gamer or someone looking for something light to play. It’s easy to pick up and there’s enough of a story to keep you going till the end. Plus, it has plenty of easter eggs for you to discover.
